Lenz adjusted the heavy pack on her back mid-stride and drove herself to move faster.

She heard the car before she saw it. It accelerated over the rise in the cul-de-sac road.

Roof.

Windscreen.

Headlights.

She slowed to a walk, pushed the strap of the duffel bag high on her shoulder and placed her right hand over the grip of the pistol holstered at the small of her back.

She stepped closer to the curb, glaring past the headlights, holding the pistol firmly in her hand, ready to draw. Ready to fire.

The sedan drew closer. The silhouette of a driver… a man.. no passengers.

They could be hiding, ducked low.

She took another step closer to the road.

The sedan accelerated.

Lenz stepped further onto the road, leaned forward, and squinted against the bright headlights

Five yards.

Four.

Three.

Two yards.

Lenz blocked the glare of the headlights with her left hand and stared at the face behind the wheel as the driver looked at her. The man looked away quickly. The car dove parallel to her. The driver looked back at her, then away.

Young. Too young.

Not one of her targets.

She stepped back, removed her grip on the gun, pushed the duffel bag back, and leaned forward in a sprint.
